How I Built My DJ Career from Scratch

Every great journey starts with a single step, and mine began in the crowded halls of Makerere University. Armed with nothing but a laptop, a passion for music, and an unshakeable belief that I could move a crowd, I started DJing at small campus events. Those early days were filled with challenges — borrowed equipment, tiny budgets, and audiences that needed convincing. But every event taught me something new about reading a crowd and crafting the perfect set. The turning point came when I decided to take my mixes online. YouTube became my stage, and suddenly my audience wasn't limited to a single venue in Kampala. I started uploading nonstop mix videos, focusing on what I knew best — Ugandan music in all its genres. The response was overwhelming. Fans from across East Africa and the diaspora connected with the mixes, and the subscriber count began to climb steadily. Building a brand wasn't easy. I invested countless hours learning video editing, social media marketing, and audio engineering. I made mistakes along the way — mixes with poor audio quality, inconsistent upload schedules, and moments of self-doubt. But each setback was a lesson. I learned to be consistent, to listen to my audience, and to always push for better quality. Today, as the CEO of Swagzero-DJs Entertainment, I look back at those campus days with gratitude. The journey from a university DJ to a recognized name in the Ugandan music scene has been incredible. My advice to aspiring DJs: start where you are, use what you have, and never stop learning. The music industry rewards persistence and authenticity above all else.
